How to protect your home from ice dams! - Horizon Insurance

2/14/2017

Picture
After three winter storms in less than a week, you may be noticing some pretty large snow piles on the roof of your home. With a slight warm up in temperature coming mid-week, now is the time to remove snow in order to prevent the buildup of ice dams - and potential damage to your home.

As you may recall from our winter in 2015, ice dams can be very destructive as the water from melting snow backs up behind the dam and leaks into your home underneath the shingles.

There are two basic approaches to help you prevent damage to your home from ice dams:

1. Remove snow and ice from your roof. The safest way to clear your roof is to hire a snow removal professional. However, if you plan to do it yourself, follow these recommendations from roofing experts:
     •         Use a roof rake instead of a shovel
     •         Try not to damage your shingles
     •         Avoid standing under icicles or roofs with large amounts of snow
     •         Use extreme caution when using ladders because rungs become very slippery
     •         Keep tools away from electrical wires
     •         Have someone nearby in case you need assistance

2. Create channels to help melt ice.
     •         If you notice an ice buildup, fill a large sock with a melting agent (preferably calcium chloride) and lay it across the dam perpendicular to the gutter
     •         The sock will release the melting agent gradually and create a channel in the ice for water to empty through
     •         You may need several socks for an ice dam that runs the length of your roof

What if water is dripping inside my home?

If you notice leaks in your home, it's important to do what you can to mitigate the damage:
     •         Collect the dripping water in buckets and pans
     •         Mop up standing water
     •         Move furniture, clothes and valuables out of harm's way
     •         Call a professional to deal with the snow on the roof and to dry out your house

Massachusetts will soon prohibit holding cell phones while driving!

11/18/2015

Picture
Massachusetts lawmakers gave initial approval to a proposed bill that would prohibit drivers from holding a cell phone, except in emergency cases.

A second vote of Massachusetts state representatives is needed for the bill to go the Massachusetts Senate.

There are 14 states, including New Hampshire, Connecticut and New York that have hands-free laws.

It has been illegal in Massachusetts since 2010 for drivers under age 18 to use their phones in their vehicles.

Texting and driving is already illegal in the Commonwealth.
Drivers caught are given a $100 ticket for the first offense, $250 for the second, then $500 for subsequent offenses.

Proposed fines for drivers using their phones, if a hand-free state law passes, range from $100 to $1,500.

One of the bills proposed in the Massachusetts House of Representatives seeks to toughen distracted driving penalties too, proposing a license suspension of 90 days and an initial fine of $250 for a first offense, $500 for the second, $750 for subsequent offenses.

Does Car Insurance Cover Flood Damage?

9/30/2015

Picture
When you imagine all the dangers threatening your car, water's probably far down the list. But flood damage happens, and it can have a devastating impact. Is my car covered for flood damage?

Since people are used to purchasing separate flood policies for their homes automatically, they begin to think that  they need to shop for some flood insurance for their cars.

So where Can You Purchase Flood Insurance for Cars? The answer is that cars are easily insured against flood damage if you purchase Comprehensive coverage to protect your vehicle.  Auto policies provide coverage for your legal liability for damage to others and their property, but they can also protect your vehicle from some of the vagaries of life. Below is a typical explanation of Comprehensive Coverage.
  •  Comprehensive Coverage – pays if your car is damaged in a way that does not involve collision. Risks covered under the standard auto policy are: theft, hail, fire, flood, earthquake, explosion, falling objects, vandalism, and involvements with animals. Lenders require this coverage if you have an automobile loan, but this is not required by the state.
If you have a loan on your car then rest assure that you have this coverage in place as the lenders require it. Otherwise, check with your insurance agent to make sure that Comprehensive coverage is put on your policy. We at Horizon Insurance advise all of our clients to have comprehensive insurance and will be happy to assist you!

Starting April 7th new Massachusetts law says keep lights on when it rains | Horizon Insurance LLC

4/7/2015

A new state law that takes effect April 7 requires that drivers turn on their headlights and taillights when their windshield wipers are in use. Headlights must also be on a half-hour after sunset and a half-hour before sunrise.
Massachusetts joins 18 other states that specifically require headlights to be in use when windshield wipers are on.
While the fine for violating the new law is only $5, a driver who gets ticketed for a headlights offense will also face insurance surcharges.
Under Massachusetts law, surchargeable violations are recorded on a person’s driving record and result in increased insurance rates. Since the penalty for this violation is only $5 we anticipate might ignore the law, and end up paying more on their insurance on surcharges. This is why we are notifying our costumers

The Massachusetts law specifically references both headlights and taillights. Since some daytime running lights systems don’t illuminate a car’s taillights. The law also requires drivers to use their headlights whenever visibility is less than 500 feet.

Being Insured Vs Being Protected

1/20/2015

Picture
As clients sit down to discuss their insurance needs at our office, I cannot help but notice a pattern.  People with significant assets are not rightly protected on their insurance policies. For a fraction of what they spend on very insignificant things, they could buy the peace of mind they deserve and will protect their assets and their families.

At Horizon, our agenda is to educating every single client of ours about the importance of being protected. Review clients’ policies and their financial situation, by explaining the very simple difference between being insured versus being protected.

To our big surprise most of them have never heard such a thing before. They are not aware of the difference and simply state that “we thought everything was taken care of”.

As soon as we do what we do best explain to them what is needed to protect them they are happy to have met us.

If we take the example of a car insurance. A family with a home two cars and young children have bare bone state mandated coverages.  We find that this market needs to get a better protection on their auto and their homes but instead we see hard working people that spend all their living hours working hard for their families but neglect to protect them. The adequate protection costs much less than, not just the latte they buy in the morning, but for the amount of the tip they give to the barista that gives them the coffee.

As you go through life make it your aim to be protected rather than insured. I guarantee you the difference it cost less than your Starbucks latte and sometimes less than the tips you give to the barista that makes you the latte.  Don’t settle for less when it comes to insurance!

At Horizon we take the time to make sure you are properly covered and will pair you with one of our many carriers that we have, to offer the best coverage and solution for your insurance needs.

Explore! The Story of Horizon Insurance.

1/6/2015

Picture
Exploring is imbedded in us since the day we are born. However, as we grow up and go through school and life, teachers, parents and managers beat exploration out of us and often we become robots and afraid of exploring. As we go through regular life struggles often we become prisoners of our daily routine. We stop exploring new things and ideas become a foreign concept and scare us.

As I am sitting in my back yard in a sunny summer Sunday afternoon, sipping in a Frappe, and discussing random things in life with my wife Gerta and our friends Jonel & Orieta Kristo a business conversation started. As I had started working in the Insurance Industry because of Orieta we started discussing how it would be to build our own Insurance Agency.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon sipping Frappe in the back yard, I could usually put a man in the moon. Per usual when talking about startups, blood started rushing through my body and I started crunching numbers in my head, thinking of what we would name the business and all the possible avenues and risks. As I calculate this with the speed of light for absolute no reason than my personal satisfaction, my friends and my wife apart from thinking I was a bit crazy they liked my enthusiasm.  Apart from the initial excitement we had to calculate how much was at stake and if we can pull it off.

With all this in mind we decided that we should not set anything in stone but we should explore the idea, and we did. We met each week, drafted a business plan, run through the numbers, and all we needed. The further we explored, the more we got into it. Soon it was clear that this would be a great fit for us.  After a few weeks of exploration it became evident to us that this was meant to be and it will be insane not to pursue it further.  This is how Horizon Insurance LLC was born.

This story can be anyone's, also it does not mean that everything you explore it turns into business.  I can attest to the fact that not all that you explore turns into the opportunity that fits you or that you would like to pursue. Exploring instead, is the form of inquiry of sorting possibilities for your next career or starting your own business. The more you do it the closer you get to find your path.

Since Exploring is in our DNA I challenge you to have 2015 as the year of your exploration if you have not done so yet. Do not shut down any doors, listen and explore each opportunity that comes your way, soon enough you will notice that exploring will bear fruits sooner than you thought it would.
